PayPal Refund Policy: Are PayPal refunds instant?
Have you ever requested a refund from PayPal but wondered what happens next? Do you receive an instant refund, or is there some waiting time involved?
If you’ve ever wondered about this or how PayPal refunds money, keep reading.
How Do Refunds On PayPal Work?
PayPal’s programme protects buyers from scams if a seller misrepresents a product or doesn’t send the item. PayPal agrees with a few of the most common reasons why people ask for refunds:
- 1- You are not satisfied with your purchase
Ever buy anything online you didn’t like?
We know how that feels.
You’re probably thinking: “What do I do now?”
If you bought something on eBay and it didn’t work out for you, PayPal is here to help!
When you purchase with PayPal, we automatically create a refund request for your purchase within seven days of the original payment date.
Your refund request will be sent to us within seven days of the original payment date. Once our fraud protection team approves this request, we’ll send an email to both parties (buyer and seller), notifying them that the refund has been issued
- 2-You have not received it
If you’ve paid for an item that hasn’t arrived, you can claim a refund through PayPal. For example, the seller might still have the thing, or they may have sent it to the wrong address.
You can also claim a refund if the seller didn’t send the correct item or if their account was hacked, which has resulted in them not sending your order.
Here’s how it works:
1. Contact the seller directly using the ‘Contact’ button on their profile page. It’s important to let them know you’re filing a dispute and why you’re doing so.
2. You can also file a dispute through PayPal’s Resolution Centre. Go to this link, click “Open Dispute,” and follow the prompts from there (you’ll need to sign in). Again, ensure you include any evidence of your purchase so that PayPal can investigate more thoroughly.
3. If PayPal favours your claim, they’ll give you your money back – usually within 30 days of starting proceedings!
- 3-The seller does not collect the payment
If you’re a seller on PayPal, you’ve probably experienced the following situation:
You’ve sold an item to a buyer. The buyer has paid for it but has not yet received it. So you ship the package and wait for your money to appear in your PayPal account. But then… nothing. Days go by, and still no money! What happened?
If the buyer doesn’t claim their payment within 30 days of purchase, it will automatically be refunded to you!
That’s right: PayPal has your back.
The only caveat is that if the buyer paid with a credit card (and other payments), they could contest their chargeback within 60 days of purchase. In that case, PayPal will hold on to your cash and theirs until the dispute is resolved.
Are PayPal refunds instant?
If a customer pays with money from their bank account or PayPal balance, the funds will be put back into their PayPal balance.
Most refunds will be done within three to five days, but your customer’s PayPal account may show “Pending” immediately.
How Do I Claim a Refund Through PayPal?
So you bought something, but now you want to cancel the transaction. Maybe it’s because you changed your mind about the item, or it’s just not what you expected. Either way, PayPal won’t let you get a refund—they don’t provide refunds.
However! They allow you to cancel your purchase and stop the process before it gets shipped.
We don’t recommend it if you’re thinking about getting a chargeback for your PayPal purchase. Chargebacks are usually only available when there is fraud involved with the transaction:
if someone steals your card or uses an expired card number without permission, they can be charged back by their bank (or credit card company). But if there isn’t any fraud involved? You’ll probably end up paying fees to both PayPal and your bank.
Just cancel the order instead of asking for a chargeback and stopping the transaction before it gets shipped out. There won’t be any fees for stopping a trade through PayPal or your bank/credit card company!
You can call PayPal’s customer service if you want to double-check something with a real person.

- Does PayPal refund go back on your debit card?
Yes, PayPal will put your refund on your debit card. When you pay with a debit card, the money will return to that card.
If the refund can’t be set on your debit card, it will be placed on your PayPal account. So, for example, if you paid with the balance in your PayPal Cash or PayPal Cash Plus account, the refund would be added to your balance.
