How does PayPal purchase protection work?
I’ll cover that in this post and all the things you can do to prevent potential fraud scenarios.
What exactly is PayPal Buyer Protection, and how exactly does it function?
When purchasing something and getting scammed, many feel vulnerable and lost. So how do we get our money back? That’s the question.
You may have heard of the ‘PayPal Purchase Protection Programme’ when placing an order online. This scheme allows you to claim a refund if your purchase doesn’t match your expectations. This can be useful in receiving a damaged or incorrect item or experiencing seller fraud. Let’s look at what you’d need to do if this happens.
PayPal offers several programmes to protect users from fraud and mistakes. Here’s how they work:
- Purchase protection:
If you make a purchase that doesn’t meet your expectations, like if it arrives broken or in less quantity than you ordered.
PayPal’s purchase protection programme covers the item. So you may be able to get your refund back.
You can also get a refund if someone else used your PayPal account without your permission, as long as you let PayPal know within 180 days of the payment date.
- Dispute resolution:
Suppose you feel like someone has cheated or defrauded you during a transaction (for example, selling an item that isn’t as described).
In that case, you can use PayPal’s resolution centre to file a dispute.
The company will investigate the claim and decide based on the evidence presented by both sides.
- Buyer protection:
If someone buys an item from you using PayPal and doesn’t pay for it, they’re breaking their part of the deal—but they’re not breaking the law! For this reason, PayPal offers buyer protection on eligible items that cost between $250 (£200) and $20,000 (about £16k).

Purchase protection fails when?
Cybercriminals who use PayPal know there are flaws in how PayPal handles refunds. So, they use a variety of strategies to win arguments. Here are some of the most obvious ones:
They claim that they never received any communication from you. The fact is that PayPal does not have a dedicated channel for customer service or complaints. You may only contact them by email and wait for a response.
They claim that their account has been hacked, so they are not responsible for purchases made with stolen credit cards or other fraudulent methods.
They threaten to file a chargeback with the credit card company if you don’t refund them immediately.
paypal says I have a refund but no money
If you’re wondering why you can’t see your PayPal refund yet, there are many possible explanations:
1) You have not yet received your return or refund authorization from your seller. If this happens to be the case, there isn’t anything you can do until they send it to you!
2) You must verify your email address before receiving any refunds from PayPal. If you haven’t done so already, go ahead and log into your account and follow these steps: [link]
3) If none of these options work for you, call us at [phone number]. We’ll be happy to help out

paypal buyer protection, Facebook marketplace
Does it cover purchases from Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace? Yes, but only in certain circumstances. The seller must ship the item to you. There is no cover for purchased used or secondhand goods you pick up in person or have personally delivered.
If you’ve experienced seller fraud, you may have wondered whether or not you can get a refund from PayPal. Unfortunately, as PayPal isn’t directly involved in the transaction, there’s nothing for it to do in this scenario. This is where being thorough when selecting your seller comes into play. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
